District 6900 Launches Ethiopia Program

Atlanta District 6900 – Moves Forward with Ethiopia SafeWater Plus

On Saturday March 10, 2007 at the District 6900 President-Elect Training Seminar in Atlanta Georgia District Governor-elect Bill Woulfin from the Rotary Club of Dunwoody GA proudly announced the kick-off of his district’s effort to help the children stop dying.  Their Rotary SafeWater Plus project will also be a cooperative effort with World Vision and involve supplying safe drinking water and sanitation education to villages in Ethiopia.

The planned for Ethiopia SafeWater Plus project will see true magic happen as matching funds from The Rotary Foundation, World Vision and the Hilton Foundation turn $200,000 in club contribution into a $2,000,000 project!

The district anticipates raising funds as follows:
1.    $200,000 from Rotary Clubs in Rotary District 6900 (Close to 70 clubs at $1,000 per year for 3 years;
2.    $100,000 in District Designated Funds from District 6900;
3.    $200,000 from the Rotary Foundation in the form of a matching grant;
4.    $500,000 in matching funds from World Vision; and
5.    $1,000,000 in matching funds from the Hilton Foundation.

Our congratulations go out to DGE Bill Woulfin and his team of Rotary volunteer leaders that include DGN Ted Propes; DGND Roy Strickland; PDG and past DRFC Robert Hall, PDG and DRFC Fran Milberg; Grants Chair Sally Platt and Project Contact Coordinator Dale Phenicie.

Kim Lorenz, a Rotarian and consultant for World Vision, was instrumental in helping put this project together.  We wish the entire team the best of luck on their district wide, large scale effort.  The District 5950 SafeWater Plus committee will continue to work with District 6900 to help them move forward with the project in Ethiopia.  Together we truly can change the world and help the children stop dying.
