Jerry's Dream - Ten Wells in Perches
Jerry's Dream - Ten new wells to be drilled in Perches, Haiti. About two years ago, a Rotarian from the Chariton, Iowa Rotary Club died suddenly at the age of 59. His name was Jerry Willis. A few years before his untimely death, Jerry had traveled to Haiti with a church volunteer group. He witnessed first hand the need, the poverty and the deaths of many young children due to drinking contaminated water. Jerry told his wife, Gloria, that someday he wanted to build a well for the needy in Haiti. Being the father of four children, he was never able to build his well, but it was always on his mind of something he needed to do someday. After his death, his family created a memorial fund to build Jerry's well. Amazingly, $10,000 was raised. They approached the Chariton Rotary Club for additional support which they readily provided. As a result of the combined gifts - Memorial Fund, Chariton Rotary Club and a Rotary International Matching Grant - $50,000 will be sent to Haiti to drill ten new wells in the Perches area. Each well will provide safe drinking water for a community of 250 people. Thanks to the Willis family and the Chariton Rotarians, Jerry's dream will be fulfilled ten fold. Thanks to the dreamer, in the Perches area, The Children Will Stop Dying. |
