CLUB AND DISTRICT START UP

Recognize the Need
Worldwide 6,000 children under the age of five die every day, mostly from diseases caused by drinking contaminated water.  Rotary International and our partner organizations recongnize this need.  Rotary is asking each club to participate in a water project in 06/07 and 07/08.

Pilot Projects
Learn by doing smaller projects - $10,000 - $50,000.  The Adopt-A-Well program is perfect for this need.

Partner with Non-Governmental Organizations
(NGO’s) with safe water experience: CARE, Water For People, Life Water International, World Vision and many others.
- We did ten pilot projects in eight countries.
- The projects were funded by a club or a group of clubs using World Community
Service Matching Grants.

Major Project
- They take several years to complete. Our project was four phases over four years.
- The project was a $2 million project to drill 141 wells, build 1,200 latrines and provide
health and sanitation education in the Central Plateau Region of Haiti.
- First determine the area in the world you want the project in.
- Ask for “Requests For Proposals” from several NGO’s.
- For our project the requirements were:
- Must provide health and sanitation education.
- Must provide safe drinking water and latrines.
- Must demonstrate ten-year sustainability.
- Must be accessible to us for volunteer trips.
- Funding
- Seek a “Challenge” lead gift. Rotarians meet a challenge.
- Our “Challenge” gift was for $100,000. This was quickly matched with an additional
   $150,000 from Rotarians.
- We used increased giving to Annual Giving of The Rotary Foundation to fund the project.
Our District of 3,100 members increased our per capita giving from less than $100 to
$200 and we have maintained that level for three years.
- After two years the DDF dollars from the excess giving are used to fund each phase of the
project. DDF dollars are matched 100% by The Rotary Foundation.
